How does God love?
This is a question that seems to be a lot easier to answer when you find yourself celebrating that new friendship or just after you land that rockin’ promotion at work, when times are good.
But, what about the times when things don’t seem to be going as well? When the unwelcomed seasons of change, loneliness, or uncertainly suddenly come knocking on your door?
Praise Jesus that God’s love for us is in no way conditional to our current circumstance. No matter what is going on in your life, God is still love (1 John 4:8).
At first, I didn’t quite understand just how God could actually be love. Like, how can an actual entity be love?
For me, I had to ask God just what He meant by that. And lemme tell ya, His response was amazing.
The Bible describes love in 1 Corinthians as follows:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (13:4-8).
This is God’s description of love. And because God is love, this is how He loves.
Even when times get tough and you find yourself seeking happiness and fulfillment through other things, He patiently waits for your return. He does not proudly boast that He was right, keeping a record of your wrongs upon your return, either. When you weakly ask Him to carry you or pull you through when it feels like you are completely and utterly broken it two, He always will. That’s just who He is. His kindness forged from this very love simply doesn’t allow for anything else.
And once you find yourself wrapped tightly in His arms, you are protected by a love that always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.
A love that truly never fails…
Your current crappy circumstance may remain the same, but His love remains the same as well.
How He loves is what proves to us that God is love.
How. He. Loves.
